Security Guard Training Requirements in California

Before you can apply for a security guard job in the State of California, you need to meet and submit all of the necessary requirements. Take note, security guard requirements from the State of California varies from the other states.

In order for you to work as an unarmed security guard in the State of California, you must have the following qualifications:

1. You must be at least 18 years old and above

- If you are below 18 years old then sad to say that you are not yet qualified to apply.

2. Criminal Background Check

- The California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) will conduct any criminal history background that you got involved. It can be bad on your application if you have one.

3. Completed at least 40 hours Training

- You must have completed your 40 hour security guard training from a certified training facility within the state of California.

Processing your Application via Online


It may take you some time to process your application if you are doing it via manual submission and processing. So to speed up your application process, it's best to do it online.

To process your application via online, here are the following requirements and procedures on how to do it:

First, you must have already received the 8 hour "Power to Arrest" training and passed the examination.

Second, either you or your training facility have submitted your application online which is sent directly to the Bureau. If your training facility does not process applications online then you can do it here:

You will be charged with a total amount of $51.00 for your Security Guard Application Fee ($50.00) and Online Convenience Fee ($1.00).

Third, submit your fingerprints electronically by using Live Scan. It is actually very important that you have to use the Live Forms provided by the Bureau at their official website or, you can also obtain the form from the Bureau office.

You will actually be paying for your Fingerprint Fees. Currently, the Department of Justice will ask a fee of $32.00 while the Federal Bureau of Investigation is $19.00 for a total fee of worth $51.00.

Please be informed that the Live Scan sites may charge you a certain amount of processing fee. The amount may vary from one site to another as the fee is not set by the Bureau.

Fourth, after submitting all those requirements above, all you have to do next is simply wait for it to be reviewed by the Bureau. You can verify your application by visiting the "Verify a License" of the Bureau's website.

Once your application passed the Bureau's review, your registration will appear on their website. There, you can acquire a screen-print which you can use as an interim security guard registration. 

As for your actual security guard registration, the Bureau will mail it to you within 10 to 15 business days.

Fifth, If it happens that you are given an assignment, you must always have the following documents with you:

1. Valid Security Guard Registration

- This is the document issued to you by the Bureau as mentioned above. If you do not have yet the actual registration, you can temporarily use the online screen print.

2. Valid Photo Identification

- You must have the most recent photo of your face and must be clearly visible.

Traditional Method of Processing your Application


If you prefer the traditional method of processing your application, you still need to acquire the same requirements mentioned above. You have to submit your completed security guard application and Security Guard Live Scans.

The registration fee is worth $50, DOJ Fingerprint Processing Fee is $32 and FBI Fingerprint Processing Fee is $19. Both the fingerprint processing fees must be paid at the Live Scan site and not from the Bureau.

Armed Security Guard Training Requirements in California


If you have completed your armed security guard training in California then you will be issued a "Security Guard Firearms Permit" which allows you to carry your firearm while on duty. The training consists of a total of 14 hours, 8 hours classroom lectures and 6 hours range time. Once you have completed your training, it is important that you have to submit your application to BSIS (Bureau of Security and Investigative Services).

You have to know that the BSIS requires you to renew your firearm permit every after two years. And before you can re-qualify for the renewal of your permit, the BSIS will verify your training. Thus, you need to meet the training requirements such as the "Annual Training".
